2008 burned one question into my brain

I watched the financial crisis happen in real time. 401ks evaporating overnight. People I knew getting handed boxes with their belongings. Living paycheck to paycheck and then suddenly wondering how they’d pay next month’s bills.

That crisis burned one question into my mind: How do I protect myself from financial disaster and job loss? So I hit the books. Learning everything I could about markets, risk, and building real financial security. (I used to repair PCs in my garage when I was laid off — so I understood what happens when people have no backup plan.)

2017 — I got lucky. And I knew it.

I blindly bought NVDA calls and they printed hard. The problem? Zero technical analysis. I’m a gamer — I just knew NVIDIA made great graphics cards. That was my entire thesis.

I got lucky on that first trade. So I went back and learned the actual system. Because luck doesn’t compound — but skill does.

Born in Canada to Indian parents. My dad worked in petroleum so I grew up moving between countries, constantly adapting. Undergrad in biomedical and electrical engineering, a Master’s in electrical engineering, four years as an IT consultant, nuclear engineering in the US Navy. Then I went back for a PhD in electrical engineering.

Being a PhD student gave me something I hadn’t had in years — time to reflect. Time to ask whether I really wanted to spend the rest of my life working for someone else. Time to realize that financial independence wasn’t just a dream — it was a necessity.

In 2018 I got serious about trading. I’d been investing passively since my Master’s — index funds, set-it-and-forget-it. Safe, boring, slow. This time I decided to go harder.

I took courses. Tried strategies — some worked, most didn’t. I built a Python program to analyze the market and scan for setups. I read charts for hours every day. I still do.

Did I lose money? Absolutely. But I preserved capital at all costs. I risked small, learned fast, and survived long enough to figure out what actually worked.
